World Cancer Day: Surveys for Asia-Pacific Equity

PUBLISHED ON February 4, 2025

Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India – February 4, 2025

In collaboration with Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences (SHUATS), the International Cancer Patient Coalition (ICPC) announces the launch of two crucial surveys aimed at transforming cancer care across India and the broader Asia-Pacific region. These surveys, which are now live, are designed to gather insights into the barriers and opportunities for improving cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and survivorship care across the region.

The surveys target both healthcare professionals and the general public, gathering essential data on key challenges such as infrastructure deficits, the integration of traditional medicine, and the scalability of innovations in rural areas. The responses will directly influence the agenda at the upcoming “Equity in Action: Driving Progress in Cancer Care” summit, which takes place on February 20-21, 2025.

“In the Asia-Pacific region, cancer care must be an accessible right for all. By fostering collaboration, innovation, and leveraging resources from diverse healthcare systems, we can begin to address the disparities that continue to plague our communities. Only through a collective effort can we bring equitable cancer care to every patient, regardless of their economic background or geographical location,” said Prof. (Dr.) Jonathan A. Lal, Pro-VC Academic Affairs at SHUATS and Board Member of ICPC.

The surveys provide vital data that is actively being used, in collaboration with SHUATS, to build actionable frameworks addressing inequities in cancer care faced by millions across India and the Asia-Pacific region.

“The key to addressing cancer care inequities in the Asia-Pacific lies not only in adopting the latest advancements in science and technology but also in ensuring that these innovations reach every corner of our region. Our focus must remain on building strong healthcare systems that empower patients, communities, and policymakers to work together in achieving cancer care that is both advanced and equitable,” commented Prof. (Dr.) Denis Horgan, Secretary General of ICPC and Executive Director of the European Alliance for Personalized Medicine.

The surveys cover critical topics such as:

  • Access to cancer treatments and diagnostics
  • Cancer prevention program challenges
  • Barriers to cancer care in rural and underprivileged areas
  • Sustainability of telemedicine and public-private partnerships
  • Training and retention of oncology professionals
